BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHILE the Basseterre High School (BHS) is currently without a principal because Carlene Henry-Morton has taken up position at the Ministry of Tourism, there are others who are no longer responsible for learning institutions across the island in which they have served for many years.
Speaking with SKNVibes this afternoon (Aug. 12), Minister of Education the Hon. Shawn K. Richards declared that the leaders for at least four other schools have either retired or been transferred to other areas of the civil service.
He explained that Principal of the Washington Archibald High School, Clifford Govia is now the Chief Personnel Officer of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
He also informed that heads of the Verchild’s High, Tyrell Williams Primary, Violet Petty Primary and the Verchild’s Primary Schools have also retired.
Among the retirees, he indicated, is the Deputy Principal for the Sandy Point Primary School.
Effectively therefore, Richards said the Ministry is in the process of weighing its options for the filling of these six key vacancies and others.
“We are currently in discussion on the placement of teachers including the management of the different educational institutions. As part of those discussions, we have a pool of teachers who are very well qualified, who are to be considered to head the different institutions.”
Minister Richards said decisions have not yet been made but noted that with the September 7 commencement date for the 2015-2016 school year fast approaching, decisions would have to be made soon.
However, it is being peddled in some quarters that the vacancy at the Basseterre High School would be filled by Bishop Ron Collins.
