BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 3RD 2005 Japan has expressed thanks to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis for its support to get a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Visiting Japanese Ambassador to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Shigenobu Kato told Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas during a courtesy call, that despite the setback, Japan appreciated the strong support of Basseterre and the other Caribbean states for Tokyo's UN Security Council seat bid.
Ambassador Kato said Japan can count on the support of some 90 nations including several from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
Prime Minister Douglas said St. Kitts and Nevis and the Caribbean will continue to pursue efforts of reform within the United Nations after 60 years.
Dr. Douglas praised Japan for using its resources to assist other developing countries around the world.
Japan, along with Brazil, Germany and India (G-4) have expressed interest in becoming members in an enlarged U.N. Security Council.
The G-4 nations are seeking to increase the number of Security Council seats from the current 10 by adding six new permanent members and four new non-permanent members.
