The Alzheimer’s Association of St. Kitts and Nevis and World Alzheimer’s Month

By: Alzheimer’s Association, Press Release

August 20th, 2015 -- At the recent meeting of the Alzheimer’s Association of St. Kitts and Nevis, which was held on August 17th, association president Dr. Joan Rawlins reminded the members that World Alzheimer’s month is celebrated each year in September and that September 21st is specifically named as WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY.

The Alzheimer’s Association of St. Kitts and Nevis is a non- governmental organization (NGO) which seeks to improve the population’s awareness of the condition and provide support to persons with the disease and their caregivers. The group meets on the third Monday of each month at the Girl Guides Headquarters, Taylor’s Range.

The main issues discussed at this recent meeting related to the planning of activities for World Alzheimer s month (September). The executive and group members agreed that the group would repeat some of the activities which  were  done  last  year and add a number of  other  activities including  a fund raiser. The activities now planned for World Alzheimer’s month 2015 are as follows: distribution of  literature  about Alzheimer’s disease,  public  showing of a film about Alzheimer’s  and other dementias, discussion on radio  and television about  Alzheimer’s  disease and the need for proper care of such persons. A fund raising TEA Party with a flair, will also be part of the month’s events. The Tea Party will take place on Saturday 26th September, 2015 beginning at 4:00PM at the Girl Guides Headquarters.

World Alzheimer’s Day (September 21) would have its own event. The regular meeting of the Association would take place on that day and would take the form of a mini- seminar. The event will commence at 10:00AM and will be at the Girl Guide Head Quarters.  Guest speakers will be announced shortly. The public will be advised about the other events and venues in the near future.

Shown in the attached photo are two new members of the organization Mary Phipps and Delicia Julius being pinned by president Dr Joan Rawlins. Mrs Doris Adams a founding member of the Association is also shown in the photo. “The pin” which shows the “Forget me not Flower” reminds us that although persons with Alzheimer’s disease cannot remember, we will not forget them.

The board members of the Association are: Dr. Joan Rawlins, Dr. Samuel Rawlins, Ms Vanta Archibald, Ms Susanna Lee, Mrs Carolette Crook, Mr Charles Benjamin, Ms Clarita Richards and Dr Izben William (honorary member).
