Two years hard labour for stealing from tourist

    CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A Cotton Ground resident was sentenced to two years hard labour after he was found guilty of larceny in the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court.

     

    Jermaine Wilkinson, who appeared before Magistrate Yasmin Clarke on Wednesday (Apr. 15), pleaded not guilty to stealing from Michale Parish of the United Kingdom, a wedding ring valued $5 000, a Blackberry phone valued $162, a black shorts valued $30, and $5 in cash. The total value of the items stolen was $EC5 197.

     

    The offence took place at Montpelier on April 11, 2009 while Parish was at the beach. Parish said he saw the accused take his property and run off. He reported the incident to the police and as a result Wilkinson was arrested and charged.

     

    Wilkinson begged for leniency after was he was found guilty and sentenced to three years imprisonment by Magistrate Clarke. The Magistrate told him that she would be lenient if he returns the stolen items. To this end, Wilkinson, accompanied by a police officer, went to Cotton Ground and recovered the stolen items. The phone was however earlier retrieved from the scene of the crime.

     

    Wilkinson received the lighter sentence on his return to court.
