Sherry Tross, Accomplished National, to Give Address at PM's Lecture Series

Sherry Tross will share some of her knowledge at the PM’s Lecture Series on Tuesday
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 11, 2015 (SKNIS): Sherry Tross, a daughter of the soil, is the guest speaker for this year’s Prime Minister’s Lecture Series.

According to her biography, Ms. Tross, who hails from Nevis, has spent her adult life committed to development and good governance in the Caribbean and Latin America through her work in academia, the private sector and the multilateral arena.

She helped to create and design the University of Miami’s first Caribbean Studies Programme at the graduate level. She was later appointed Programme Director of the University of Miami’s North-South Center, a think-tank dedicated to promoting better relations among countries of the Americas.

In 2005, Ms. Tross joined the Organization of American States (OAS) where she was Chief of Staff and senior political advisor to the OAS Assistant Secretary General for several years. In 2013, Tross was unanimously confirmed by the 34-member states of the OAS to head the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development, the largest technical secretariat within the organization, and to simultaneously serve as Director General of the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development.

This was a great accomplishment as it marked the first time a Caribbean national and a woman held the latter post. Under her leadership, the OAS expanded public-private partnerships, grew its training and scholarship programme by more than 500 percent and positioned itself as a catalyst for South-South cooperation with emphasis on education, innovation, competitiveness and inclusion as keys for sustainable development.

Last month, Ms. Tross was appointed by the newly elected Secretary General of the OAS to create and lead a new Office of Ombudsman which aims to improve relations between management, staff and member states; to contribute management modernization; and strengthen trust.

Ms. Tross continues to engage with public officials on a range of issues of importance to the region and is a frequent speaker and lecturer at renowned institutions. She will impart her wisdom at the Prime Minister’s Lecture Series which takes place next Tuesday (September 15) at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB). The lecture begins at 7 p.m. and is part of activities for the 32nd Independence celebrations in St. Kitts and Nevis.
