Constructive Discussion on the Development of SKN Encouraged

By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 15, 2015 (SKNIS): Nationals have been encouraged to have conversations fostering the development of the Federation, during the Independence period of St. Kitts and Nevis.

This invitation was given by St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris during the sitting of National Assembly today (September 15.)

“Let us have conversations about self reliance, let us have conversations about the role of education in an independent St. Kitts and Nevis,” he said.  “Let us have the conversation about the quality of health care that an independent St. Kitts and Nevis at age 32 should be offering the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.  Let us have a conversation about all the things we have been doing and whether we need to continue doing them that way.  In other words, at age 32, let us have a conversation about ideas for the continuing mature and prosperous development of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

St. Kitts and Nevis has commenced a month-long period of activities in commemoration of the 32nd Anniversary of Independence, which takes place September 19, 2015.  Mention was made of the first event.

“Sunday [September 13], for example, we had the National State Service in Nevis at the Charlestown Methodist Church, that will long be remembered,” Prime Minister Harris recalled, referring to the event as “historic” considering that it was the first time that it was held in Nevis.  He personally thanked the ferry owners and protocol officers in the Office of the Premier in Nevis for the comfortable escort of nationals who journeyed from St. Kitts.

The first day of Ministers’ Visits to Schools had also taken place on September 14.  The Prime Minister commended the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Education Honourable Shawn Richards and his staff, including the staff at the schools where the welcome was described as warm.  Cayon High School, Saddler’s Secondary School and Violet Petty Primary were singled out for particular mention.  The second day of Ministers’ Visit to Schools is scheduled for September 17.

A special invitation was extended to the National Heroes’ Day celebration which takes place at the Bradshaw Memorial Park on September 16, (National Heroes Day) at 8 a.m.

“We invite the entire national community to come and witness Team Unity’s first celebration as a government on National Hero’s Day, and we pay homage to all our National Heros on that particular day,” the Prime Minister said.

Upcoming Independence activities include the commencement of payments to the 1,861 former sugar workers via the Sugar Workers’ Restoration Fund (SWRF.)  The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was thanked for their grant of EC$16 million.

As customary, Independence Day (September 19) will feature the Prime Minister’s Address, the National Parade, the Toast at Camp Springfield and Governor General’s Reception.
