Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 10, 2015 (SKNIS)—It is a very special honour when a citizen gets to act as the Governor-General’s Deputy. Mr. Dennis Michael Morton, J.P. recognizes this honour for what it is, an opportunity for national service in the highest public office of the 32 year old sovereign state of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“It is with a deep sense of humility that I accepted the honour bestowed on me by His Excellency S. W. Tapley Seaton to serve as Governor-General's Deputy while he is out of the Federation,” Mr. Morton said to the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service (SKNIS).
“I hope that my elevation to such a high office, even though for a short duration, will help to inspire the youth in our country, especially those who may lack self-esteem, that by their diligence and by the grace of God they recognize that all things are possible,” Mr. Morton added.
His Excellency the Governor-General Mr. S.W. Tapley Seaton, C.V.O., Q.C., J.P. is presently in Antigua to attend the 2015 U.W.I. Open Campus Presentation of Graduates Ceremony on Saturday 10th October, 2015.
His Excellency the Governor-General’s Deputy, Mr. Dennis Michael Morton, was administered the Oath of Office and the Oath of Allegiance by the Governor-General on Thursday afternoon (October 8) at Government House.
His Excellency the Governor-General’s Deputy will represent the Governor-General at several functions over the weekend including the reception marking the 104th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the International Dinner of the St. Kitts Rotary Club on the grounds of Government House.
Mr. Morton served as Director of the T.D.C. Corporation from 1976. In 1983, he assumed the position of Executive Director of the T.D.C. Group of Companies, filling the vacancy left by Warren Tyson upon his death. In 2001, Mr. Morton succeeded Mr. Michael King in becoming the Chairman of the Board of the T.D.C. Group of Companies, a position he held until his retirement from full time service of the T.D.C. Group of Companies on February 1, 2014. Mr. Morton continues as a director of T.D.C. in a non-executive capacity and serves as Marketing and Sales Consultant.
He also served as Deputy Chairman of The Eastern Caribbean Securities Exchange (ECSE) for over 10years, as President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CIC) for two 2 year terms, as a director of the Cave Hill School of Business for over 10 years and on a regional advisory committee to the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
Presently, Mr. Morton is the Honorary Consul-General for St. Kitts and Nevis to Turkey, Vice Chairman of the National Drug Council and Vice Chairman of the Council of the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society.
Mr. Morton’s immediate family was present for the auspicious occasion: his wife, Cynthia “Junie” Morton; his only surviving uncle on mother’s side, Edmund Morton; his daughter Kerryanne Amritt and her husband, Andre; and his son, Nigel Morton.
