CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – AN 18-year-old was yesterday (Apr. 22) sentenced to serve five years in Her Majesty’s Prison for possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Jeshorn Mills of St. Kitts and Craddock Road, Nevis appeared before Magistrate Claudette Jenkins in the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court and was found guilty of possession of the items he reportedly had on his person on December 5, 2008.
Prosecutor Andre Mitchell produced two witnesses, police officers, who said while on patrol in Craddock Road on the day in question, they stopped near a shop from which Mills emerged and ran towards them.
One of the officers grabbed the defendant, and while holding him around the waist he withdrew an object from his pocket and threw it away. When the object was retrieved it was revealed to be a firearm with one round of ammunition.
The officers cautioned Mills and asked him why he ran and threw away the gun. He replied it was because he saw the police.
Mills, in his defence, told the court that he knew nothing about the gun and he only went to the shop to purchase something.
After listening to both sides of the matter Magistrate Jenkins found the accused guilty and sentenced him to five years on each charge. The sentences will however run concurrently.
