Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 21, 2015 (RSCNPF):- Commissioner of Police (Ag) Stafford Liburd has indicated that a recent announcement by Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Timothy Harris is a clear indication that the government is committed to enhancing the crime fighting capability of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
The Prime Minister announced in a recent press conference, that the government had received monies in the amount of US $315,000 or EC $850,500, from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the funds were earmarked for law enforcement. He said, "these funds will support the extension of the services of the Bramshill Police Advisors out of England, and other initiatives in law and order."
He added, "we expect a new fleet of vehicles for our law enforcement agencies." Additionally, Prime Minister Harris announced a training partnership with officers from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), who will assist the Police Force with proven best practices in the fight against crime.
"Having the continued presence of the Bramshill Police Advisors is critical. Having them involved for a longer period and with greater frequency on the ground, will continue to help us build the systems that are essential for modern day crime fighting. Having the FBI on the ground will also bring new techniques and opportunities for our officers to learn," said Commissioner Liburd.
The Commissioner while reflecting on the continued support given by the government and the support for the 'Six Point Plan' said, "with this support comes responsibility, the government has demonstrated is support for the Police, and I have challenged the force to deliver."
"We have seen an upswing in operations, and we have had some success, but we must not rest. I have challenged the officers to do more and to be consistent in doing more. Our citizens and residents deserve it."
The Commissioner said, his new rallying call for the force is "do the best you can today", a phrase he said that resonate from the Prime Minister's meeting with Police in Nevis recently.
Commissioner Liburd highlighted that overall crime in the Federation is down 23.5 percent when compared to the same period (Jan-Sep) 2014. Homicides he said, continues to be the major concern for the police and with this funding that ensures a longer engagement of the Bramshill Advisors and the addition of the FBI consultants, we will continue to build the capacity from best practices shared with the goal of continuing efforts to reduce the numbers.
