Basseterre, St. Kitts, 29th October 2015 – Organizers of the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) commemoration in St. Kitts and Nevis are putting the final touches on a number of events to promote and celebrate the value of business owners to a nation’s economy and its overall development.
According to the website gew.co, GEW is widely considered “the world’s largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch start-ups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare.”
This year, the week runs from November 16 to 22 and the local theme is “People Serving People.” It was chosen to highlight the view that “entrepreneurs, supporting institutions and entities are to serve one another and the community for the benefit of all involved.
It’s about engendering entrepreneurship or more so entrepreneurial traits,” explained GEW cohost Ervin Welsh of Positively Inclined. “We see those traits as being applicable to any situation.”
One of the traits mentioned was leadership. It was described as a key ingredient necessary for success in a personal and professional capacity. Networking - a supportive system for information sharing - is an important tool used by businesses. The activities created for GEW provide opportunities for such.
Take for instance, “The Exchange” - a one-day public symposium that features an expert in a specific area of business sharing the dos and don’ts for business success. A second GEW event, dubbed “NexConnect,” is a social event where entrepreneurs exchange business cards and ideas, share stories and explore avenues for collaboration.
These events were a hit last year and created a foundation for the second annual observance in its current form. Most of the supporting agencies in 2014 such as the St. Kitts – Nevis Junior Achievement, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, and the University of the West Indies Open Campus, have confirmed their partnership for this year and relationships forged last year bore fruit as with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the FND Enterprise Co-operative Credit Union’s partnership this year. Dr. Marcia Brandon of the Caribbean Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Livelihoods also returns to co-host week of activities in St. Kitts and Nevis. GEW is an initiative of the U.S. based Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. They are reporting that the 2015 observances “will be the largest celebration of entrepreneurship yet, with events in 160 countries involving approximately 10 million people.
