BIO: Miss Pauline Herbert, who uses as her stage name, D’Opera, was born in St. Johnston Village, Basseterre. Like so many of our young people, she grew up singing in Church. She was a member of the Youth Group at the Olivet Gospel Hall and she also sang in her primary school choir. In her teens she began being asked to do solo parts in Church.
She later went to the USA on a 6-week vacation. She enjoyed her vacation and wanted to stay longer. Her hosts encouraged her to stay and to use her time to do some studies.
She enrolled in Washington Bible College in Maryland and decided to study music. Her first tutor, a male, thought she had a second soprano voice, but when she later met another tutor, Angela Powell-Walker, herself an operatic singer, she was identified as a first soprano, and that tutor (Mrs Powell-Walker) encouraged her and pushed her into fully developing her talent. Pauline was chosen to represent her College at inter-collegiate concerts and received great commendation. Later she performed in Junior and Senior Recitals in Washington D.C.
When she eventually returned to St. Kitts she continued working on voice training with Mr. Ian Hodge. He admitted to her that she was so good that he could not teach her anything new, but the relationship enabled her to continue singing the kind of music she loves. He also encouraged her to become a member of the St. Christopher Chorale Society, and she still sings with that group. In addition, Pauline has from time to time, over the past five years, been giving individual voice lessons to aspiring singers, and working with some church groups. She would love to be able to train more local singers in the art of professional singing.
Her accompanist is young Christian Nathaniel, a very accomplished musician in his own right. Together they offer a real musical treat to the people of St. Kitts.
