Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 02, 2015 (SKNIS)—Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Sports, the Honourable Shawn Richards, has promised to provide a solution to the long awaited playfield for the communities of Boyd’s, West Farm and Trinity.
For several years, the residents of these communities had been calling on the Government of the day to provide them with a playfield to accommodate the youth. A caller to the Government’s weekly radio show “Working For You” recently raised the issue with Minister Richards, noting that in the past promises were made to the residents that the playfield was going to be built, especially before a General Election, but that the promises by the previous Government remained unfulfilled.
“Each election—over the last two elections, a few yards of dirt are moved just to make them feel good and once election is over, everything ceases…,” the caller said, while asking the sports minister to assure the residents that this matter will not be used as “a political tool” ahead of the next election. Minister Richards replied that the playfield will become a priority of the Government and that it will be completed long before the next election.
“Within the last few months, for example, I can say to you that we have had discussion within the ministry as to whether or not the basketball court in the Boyd’s area should be relocated to the very same area of the playfield and that where the basketball court is (it) can be used for other purposes, be it for the children or whatever it is that the residents of Boyd’s want to use it for,” Richards said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Richards who is also Member of Parliament for Constituency 5, in responding to a question from another caller on the show, said it is not the priority of the Government at this time to re-establish a customs facility in Pump Bay, Sandy Point similar to one that was located there previously. According to Minister Richards, the Government has some very important projects working on currently, including upgrading the RLB International Airport and building a second cruise pier. He however acknowledged plans to upgrade the fishing complex in Fig Tree to meet the needs of fishermen in the area.
“I do recognize that it is a fishing community in the Fig Tree area and I know that we are seeking funding to do some repairs—some renovations on the fisheries complex in the Fig Tree, Pump Bay area and to build some sort of jetty to assist the fishermen who utilize Pump Bay,” Richards said.
