Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 10, 2015 (SKNIS): Former sugar workers, who are now shut-ins, have not been left out of the cheque distribution process as Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris and representatives of the Sugar Workers’ Restoration Fund (SWRF) have made their way to the homes of individuals who endured the hardships of working in the cane fields for the economic benefit of the country.
Chairman of the SWRF Committee, Osbert DeSuza, who was part of the delegation led by the Prime Minister, stated that the shut-ins who received cheques were persons who would have had challenges accessing the cheques at the office.
Bernice Hamm, Ermine David and Andrew Stephen all accepted cheques personally delivered to them by the Prime Minister.
Each individual took the opportunity to thank the Prime Minister for ensuring that they received their full compensation that was denied to them during the first pay-out in 2005 – 2006.
“Thank you all very much for bringing this to me and I thank Mr. Harris for bringing it too,” said Bernice Hamm. “Mr. Harris, I am glad.”
I thank you very much and I hope the Lord will go with you where ever you go,” said Ermine David. “He will never leave you nor forsake you but he will be with you after your days.”
“Thank you for this money because I worked very hard,” stated Andrew Stephen. “I thank you a lot and I thank you that this money came to me.”
Prime Minister Harris said that his Government took this initiative as a result of its compassionate nature. He echoed the sentiments of Franklyn Maitland who presided over the accounting aspect of the fund, who said that the pay-out was a matter of moral and economic justice.
“Moral justice because what Team Unity is doing is the right thing,” said the Honourable Prime Minister. “We honour the service of those who contributed to an industry which for over 300 years had been the life blood around which the socioeconomic life of St. Kitts and Nevis revolved. You have to treat those who gave up their service in that industry in a very special way and Team Unity has done that and we have done that within months of taking office.”
Forty-four cheques for sick and shut-in persons have been distributed including those residing in Nevis and the Cardin Home.
