Basseterre, St. Kitts, 10th November 2015 - The St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) continued its capacity building program when it exposed several football administrators to a General Coordinator Workshop.
The one-day intensive workshop was conducted by Gwendolyn Salmon, first vice president of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association, and a general coordinator for CONCACAF and FIFA. A general coordinator is somewhat of an event coordinator and has wide ranging responsibilities to ensure that all matches are organized and held at a specific standard.
According to SKNFA President Anthony Johnson, “a workshop of this nature achieves the standard of organization that is required by FIFA and CONCACAF.” He described the workshop “as a novel step taken by St. Kitts and Nevis in that we have never had a general coordinators course before”.
The SKNFA president further explained that the general coordinator’s role was added to the organization of football within CONCACAF. He stated, “It’s a new step that CONCACAF has taken, because they recognized the need for every game to be conducted at the same level. That is the reason why FIFA had implemented the match commissioner to ensure that every game that is organized under the auspices of FIFA, wherever it is held in the world, it is organized to the same standard.” He said FIFA went as step further and implemented the general coordinator.
Participants were advised to take the workshop seriously and to be active, using the knowledge gained to coordinate games under their responsibility. He advised, “In order to carry out the responsibilities of a general coordinator, you have to be extremely disciplined, extremely organized in your own life and that you are fair and balanced about the way you approach your task.”
Johnson indicated, also, that eventually SKNFA would like to have nationals performing general coordinator roles at the CONCACAF and the FIFA levels, and encouraged the participants to be active after the workshop and prepare for local appointments. However, he warned, “You will only be appointed if you can demonstrate at the local level a certain seriousness and commitment to the task.”
Meanwhile, Don Grant, head of the Competitions Committee, told participants, “We want persons who will help to bring the standard of football to what it is supposed to be.” He indicated that raising the standard of matches played depended on proper organization and standards, not only for the Premier Division, but also for every other category, including Division 1 Football.
