Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 09, 2015 (SKNIS): The construction and maintenance of roads in the Federation are the “mantra” of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, stated the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, Minister of Public Infrastructure, during the Government’s weekly television and radio programme “Working for You” on Wednesday, December 09.
Minister Liburd noted that a lot has been happening where road works are concerned. He stated that his ministry is committed to doing its part to ensure that roads are maintained.
“I listened to the inspector of traffic this morning and he was speaking of the pot holes in the roads that can create and cause accidents,” he said. Noting the safety concerns that such can create, Minister Liburd promised more will be done.
“We have been doing quite a lot,” he said. “We are just completing the major works on the South East Peninsula road. It is just the tunnel section that is having some issues, but the major road works there have been literally completed just a few days ago in terms of resurfacing.”
As the Minister of Public Infrastructure, he made a commitment to the upkeep of road construction and maintenance.
“We are not going to leave road construction and road maintenance to political expedience,” Minister Liburd said. “We have an agreement under the Petro-Caribe – the energy cooperation agreement with Venezuela, whereby a supply of asphalt is received and paid for by Public Works. There is no reason why our roads should not be maintained.”
Minister Liburd stated that the Government is mindful that people pay road tax, and in doing so it is only fair for roads to be free of pot holes and in good conditions.
