BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN their continued efforts to make the Federation a safer place for residents and visitors, members of the Special Services Unit (SSU) of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force have removed another firearm of the streets.
A police statement informed that during a stop and search operation yesterday (Jan. 3), members of the SSU stopped a vehicle in the Pond’s Pasture area at approximately 10:00 p.m. and a search of it revealed the find of one M12 Pistol with a magazine containing 16 matching rounds.
The two occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody assisting police with their investigation.
This is the first illegal firearm to be removed off the streets for 2016. Last year, a total of 21 illegal firearms and a large amount of ammunition were seized by police.
The statement quoted Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Ian Queeley as saying: “Safety on our streets and in our communities is a top priority for our officers, and to this end we will continue to work hard to remove illegal firearms from our communities. We will be vigilant and continue our stop and searches of persons of interest, vehicles and searches of property and abandoned lots.”
He also stated that the Police Force is urging citizens and residents to become involved and play their part in keeping the nation safe. “Therefore, if you know of anyone who is keeping a weapon illegally, you can contact us in strict confidence by calling into any police station in the Federation or Crime Stoppers, our confidential hotline, at 1-800-8477 to share information.”
