By popular opinion, the Children’s Dance Theatre outdid themselves as they executed a thrilling performance on Sunday, April 26th, at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium. The production, entitled “Dance with me through SKB” and sponsored by NATIONAL BANK, had been eagerly awaited by the loyal fans, and they were not disappointed. They were treated to a colourful and artistic tour during in which the dancers flawlessly touched on several aspects of the culture of St. Kitts.
The opening number, “Dancing in the Streets”, was reminiscent of our Carnival and had many of the members of the audience swaying in their seats. “It’s Church Time” and “Swing by the Elderly” were also superbly delivered. “Thriller in the Cemetery”, evoked laughter as the ghoulish creatures danced eerily, waving their over-sized hands at their young prey.
The segment portraying our history/culture was equally entertaining and nostalgic. The audience was taken back to yesteryear with “In de Days Gone By”. The young Fireflies dancers were not to be outdone as they moved rhythmically to the beating of the drums in “Our African Heritage”.
Sunday’s performance, however, was not without a strong social message as the audience reflected on “The State We’re In”. The dancers of the various groups gave a colourful insight into the gang culture and political conflict which threaten our island. The piece, “The Color Divide” aptly depicted this, while “Make a Move” performed by the CFBC Dance Ensemble showed that the problem was not restricted to St. Kitts. In the same vein, there was a powerful poem, “A Colorful Nation”, a clarion call for unity and harmony in our island home. Brilliant performances were also rendered by the Anjolique Dance Company, Mariece Roberts, Lizca Bass both of whom are CDT graduates and the reigning Junior Calypso Monarch, Carissa Willett. The Grand Finale, “Colors Unite”, drove home this point, bringing the evening’s performance to a fitting end.
All in all, this show was at once extremely entertaining and thought-provoking. Once again, the audience was left sated with a wonderful act by the Children’s Dance Theatre. The production team deserves kudos for what was indeed another masterful performance!
