January 8th, 2016 -- Persistent rain at the Warner Park in Basseterre, St. Kitts took away the chance of either the Leeward Islands Hurricanes or the Combined College and Campuses (CCC) Marooners from registering their first win of the 2016 Nagico Super 50 tournament on Thursday. The match which got underway at 1:30pm was abandoned around 8:30pm after rain first interrupted play around 3:30pm and which continued intermittingly for the rest of the evening.
Both teams have been awarded a point each. At the time of the interruption, the Hurricanes were at the crease with a score of 141 for 4. When play resumed, they lost a 5th wicket at 182 runs but had to leave the game at the 187 run mark as the showers came again for good this time forcing the game into abandonment at the 38th over.
The match started off quite promising for the Hurricanes with a 68-run partnership between St. Kitts home boy Shane Jeffers and Anguillan Chesney Hughes. Hughes departed with 28 runs caught and bowled by Ryan Hinds. Hinds performed the same trick two balls later catching incoming batsman Sherwin Peters cheaply for a duck. The experienced Nkrumah Bonner steadied the ship and provided stability along with Jeffers and built on the score, but the latter seemingly got a little too impatient and sloppy and went out for 47.
Rain had already affected play in the other matches of the opening day of the NAGICO Super 50. In the other St. Kitts location—the St. Pauls Cricket Grounds, Windward Volcanoes snatched a win via the Duckworth Lewis method against the Guyana Jaguars, scoring 214 for 4 from their allotted 50 overs, while the Guyana Jaguars managed 122 for 4 in a reduced 26 over inning. In Trinidad and Tobago, the host team the Red Force had their innings reduced but were still able to overcome the Jamaica Scorpions by a massive 84 runs.
The tournament continues on Saturday with Leeward Islands Hurricanes taking on The Guyana Jaguars at the Warner Park in Basseterre, St. Kitts at 1:30pm. The Windward Volcanoes will play CCC Marooners in St. Paul’s at 9:00am. In Trinidad and Tobago, the Scorpions entertain the ICC Americas while the Red Force play Barbados Pride.
