St. Kitts’ N’Sync – A dance group with a difference

BASSTERRE, St. Kitts – DANCING is more than gyrating and vulgar movements of the body. It is a sport and an art form that refers to body movements, usually rhythmic and to music as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting.

It is from this perspective that Keneshia Warner and Cherisse Sutton-Jeffers decided on October 5, 2005 to establish the N’Sync Dance Theatre.

“Our aim is to share an awareness, understanding and appreciation for the art of dance as a means of educational development to ourselves and to others,” said Jeffers, Manager/Choreographer of the group.

In addition to Warner and Sutton-Jeffers, the group is comprised of six other strong and fully equipped dancers - Unella Issac, Tonicia Martin, Cindelle Decosta, Kemorne Warner, Mellissa Wharton and Keva Saunders who is currently based overseas.

The group performs a variety of dances to music such as calypso, dancehall, reggae, drums, soul, R&B and more, which are choreographed by Sutton-Jeffers with assistance from the members.

“We are engaged in a structure and intense study on contemporary movement styles and techniques, as many of us were exposed to the elements of dance from an early age,” said Jeffers. “As a small group, we focus on a series of structured warm up exercises, progressive loco motor movement, body articulation movement phrases and other sequential modern dance techniques.”

The group has performed for numerous boat rides, graduations, Kittitian Superstar competitions, queen shows, and were regular performers at the Angelus Hotel in the past.

The group also has plans on staging its first annual dance concert and is also planning on working in the communities to encourage youths to explore themselves, to find their talent and use it constructively instead of wasting time on negative things.

The N’Sync Dance Theatre is scheduled to perform at a concert in May, which will be held at the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel.
