January 10th, 2016 -- The Guyana Jaguars sunk their claws into the heart of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes on Saturday winning by 72 runs in the NAGICO Super 50 Tournament in St. Kitts. The weather held up nicely at the Warner Park in Basseterre, providing the perfect setting for veteran Guyanese and West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul score a stunning 81, setting the foundation for victory. The Jaguars scored 219 for 9—the home side were not even close in their reply with 147 all out in 45.5 overs.

Chanderpaul was supported by 30runs from Versammy Permaul at a time when the Hurricanes seemed to be making inroads in the bowling attack. Quinton Boatswain took Chanderpaul’s wicket and immediately got the scalp of Royston Crandon for 9; on course for a hat-trick. But Permaul came in and followed up on the foundation set by Chanderpaul and helped guided the Jaguars to the end of the innings.

The Hurricanes were dismal. They were unable to handle the spin bowling from the Jaguars and only two batsmen—Kittitian Jacques Taylor and Olando Peters registered double figures with 22 and 35 runs respectively. The openers Shane Jeffers went out for 2 and Chesney Hughes 6—a precursor of what was to come. Gudakesh Motie shone again for the Jaguars bowling after having a good game on Thursday against the Windward Volcanoes. He picked up 2 wickets for 35 in 10 overs. Permaul also contributed with the ball in the carnage with 2 for 16 in 8 overs. Paul Wintz, Raymond Reifer and Crandon each took a wicket. The only bright spark for the Hurricanes was the bowling performance of Boatswain who picked up 4 wickets for 54 runs in 9 overs.

Jaguars captain Leon Johnson, though happy with the result, was hoping the team would have scored more runs as they were aiming for at least 240. “I think we had a good all round game, we fielded well, we bowled well and we batted well,” Johnson said. He said for the next game they would have to work on bowling less extras and building more partnerships. Their next match will be against the CCC Marooners in St. Paul’s on Monday at 9:00am. The Hurricanes will play the Windward Volcanoes at the Warner Park also on Monday at 1:30pm.
