Youth Department Supports Volunteer Projects

Awards presented to the 25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts and Nevis
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 11, 2016 (SKNIS): Residents across several communities in St. Kitts and Nevis are benefitting from a number of volunteer projects being executed by members of the 25 Most Remarkable Teens 2015 class.

Community service is mandatory for all awardees and three projects in particular were highlighted on Monday (January 11) by Chereca Weaver, Senior Youth Officer in the Department of Youth Empowerment.

The first project mentioned was a dance workshop organized by Rikki Blake Brookes, Shakeen Brown and Kayla Farrell that begins tonight at the Victoria Road Community Center. The focus is on the African, Afro-Caribbean and Folklore genres. Nightly sessions will run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and caters to persons age 15 and above. It concludes on Friday, January 15.

Also this week, in Nevis, a writing workshop will be held by Kayla Sandiford for third and fourth graders at the Montessori Academy. The story telling techniques to be imparted will help participants improve their grades. Meanwhile, Kieshonna Brooks, completed her introduction to track and field session on the weekend at the Paddock in Ponds Pasture, Newtown, Basseterre. That session sought to help persons interested in learning the sport to understand the challenges, work ethic, and discipline required to succeed.

Ms. Weaver said that officials encourage the teen awardees to keep the projects Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely (SMART) based on the demands from school, home and extracurricular activities. That way the teens can interact with their peers and build or expand upon networking linkages while keeping up with their normal routine.

The senior youth officer said that pictures, videos and other presentation formats of all of the benefit activities by the 25 Most Remarkable Teens will be mounted at the Volunteer Projects Display to be held early next month.
