BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A male resident of Ottley’s Village is reportedly in custody assisting police with their investigation into this morning’s (Jan. 14) shooting death of former St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) member Vancito Dore.
A police communiqué stated that the incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. and initial investigations revealed that Dore was shot in the Upper Cayon area “by two masked assailants who alighted from a motor vehicle".
He was pronounced dead on the scene by District Medical Officer Dr. Garfield Alexander.
It also informed that police had detained one person of interest for questioning.
Investigations done by this publication revealed that the person detained for questioning is a PEP worker and he resides in Ottley’s Village.
Residents of that village informed SKNVibes that they had witnessed when police officers went to the home of the detainee’s girlfriend and thence to his, but he was at neither residences. “The police officer then went to where he was working and arrested him”.
This media house was also informed that Dore was a member of the SKNDF and was deemed unfit for military duty and subsequently discharged in either 2008 or 2009 after serving the institution for some three years.
Residents in the area where Dore resided said he used to be seen regularly walking aimlessly on the streets and that almost every day he would entered the National Bank’s automated teller machine (ATM), claiming that he was there to find out if the Defence Force had deposited his salary.
Investigations into his death are ongoing and the police are seeking the public’s assistance.
“In an appeal for assistance from the public, Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Criminal Investigations Mr. Ian Queeley said, ‘We urge anyone who may have seen any unusual activity in the upper Cayon areas this morning that could be benefit to this investigation to contact the Police, your information can be critical to this investigation. Persons with information that can assist the police in this crime, or any other crime can call any Police Station in the federation or Crime Stoppers, our confidential hotline, at 1-800-8477 to share information,,” the communiqué read.
Vancito Dore’s death is the first homicide recorded in St. Kitts and Nevis for the year. Last year there were 30 homicides, which included the two individuals shot and killed by police – Philo Wallace on Nevis and Dominican Obi Baron in the Conaree Beach drug bust.
