PM Harris demystifies rumours of resignation of Speaker and Press Secretary

Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Mr. Clecton Phillip
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 21, 2016 (SKNIS): Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, on Tuesday January 19, 2015, addressed rumours that have been recently circulated suggesting the resignation of the Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Mr Clecton Phillip, as well as that of the Speaker of The National Assembly, the Honourable Franklyn Brand.

Speaking during his first monthly press conference for the year 2016, Prime Minister Harris debunked the rumours and called for those who started them to apologize.

Rubbishing charges made about the Speaker of Parliament, the Honourable Franklyn Brand, Dr. Harris said that “there was not a scintilla of evidence to such a resignation or pending one.”

Commending the Honourable Speaker for his invaluable contribution thus far, Prime Minister Harris said, “Mr Brand has served us well so far as we attempt to bring a new ethos of responsible behaviour to the National Assembly,” and also revealed plans “to pursue a new home for Parliament and provide Parliament with appropriate resources to do its work, produce Hansards on a timely basis and enhance the role of Clerk so as to ensure that the office holder consistently operates at highly professional and international standards…Also to be introduced are functional Parliamentary committees to facilitate broad spectrum legislative consultation prior to bills being introduced into Parliament.”

“We are fortunate to have the service of Mr Brand at this time,” the prime minister said.

The Federation’s Prime Minister indicated that another rumour “has mysteriously surfaced that has to do with resignation by the Press Secretary.”  He explained that “the Press Secretary for the record, always had a one year assignment with Team Unity and that that one year assignment will end in the near future perhaps at the end of February, to be exact February 29, 2016.”

Clearing the air about any discord within his administration, Prime Minister Harris further explained that “Mr Clecton Phillip will leave the office of the Press Secretary by mutual agreement on completion of the agreed period of service.  We will in time determine where best his services can be utilized. I wish Mr Phillip well as he finds other avenues to utilize his gifts and talents.  I record my thanks to him for his contribution to the work of the Office of the Prime Minister and the country at large.”
