BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ILLEGAL drugs and ammunition were some of the items discovered yesterday morning (Jan. 21) during marijuana eradication exercises conducted by members of the security forces.
The exercises, according to Commander of District ‘B’ Inspector Cromwell Henry, took place in the Belmont Mountains and in Ottley’s and were conducted by members of his Division, the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force and Her Majesty Customs Enforcement.
“Five plots with a combined total of approximately 600 Marijuana plants ranging in height from one foot to 5 feet were uprooted. A number of garden tools and other apparatuses used for the cultivation of the plants were also seized and destroyed.”
During the Ottley’s exercise, 13 rounds of ammunition were discovered as well as camouflage clothing and a mask in an abandoned house.
“In another exercise in Ottley's, the team searched an abandoned house and found a large quantity of marijuana plants being dried as well as a large quantity of seeds. A further search of the house revealed 10 .45 rounds of ammunition, three .40 rounds of ammunition, camouflage clothing, a black hooded jacket and a mask.”
Henry indicated that all of the items were confiscated by the police but no one has been held accountable for the finds.
Commenting on the partnership among the three agencies, Superintendent Henry thanked them for their assistance and cooperation without which the “significant seizures” might not have been possible.
He also promised that in fulfillment of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s mandate to make the Federation a safer place, other such operations would be carried out in the future.
