Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 22, 2016 (SKNIS): With the election of the new and first female President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Dr.Tsai Ing-wen, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Mark Brantley, stated that diplomatic ties between Taiwan and the Federation is expected to remain strong.
“We have established diplomatic relations a very long time ago since our independence,” said Minister Brantley during Working for You on January 20. “We cooperate in so many ways, some visible, some not so visible. So the reality is that Taiwan has been a long standing partner and we expect it to remain that way.”
Our interest, in St. Kitts and Nevis, is to continue to work with them and it is our hope the peace and security that have been engendered across the Taiwan straits, which will continue.”
Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, shared the same sentiments as Minister Brantley in a congratulatory address to the new president.
“The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has over the past 32 years developed a strong bond of friendship with the Republic of China (Taiwan),” said the prime minister. “This relationship is cemented by our deep and abiding shared interests and values. It is my hope that under your able leadership that we will continue to build upon this foundation and that the relations between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan will continue to produce mutual benefits in the coming years.”
The ROC (Taiwan) has contributed to St. Kitts and Nevis in the areas of geothermal and solar energy, agriculture, sports, tourism, education and others.
Diplomatic ties were formally established in 1983 when St. Kitts and Nevis became an independent state under the leadership of former Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Sir. Kennedy Simmonds.
