Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 22, 2016 (SKNIS): Director of Bramshill Policing Advisers, Steve France-Sargeant and Associate of Bramshill Policing Advisers, Lena Samuels, met with local media on January 20 in order to create a more collaborative working relationship between the police and media.
Lena Samuels, who is also the Director of Wessex Media Group, a media marketing company in the United Kingdom, said that she is in the Federation working directly with the Prime Minister’s Office and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPC) in order to improve the dissemination of police-related information.
“Really looking at how we can improve the press out of the Police and how we can share what it is the police are doing, so the public know how we run our operations, so they think with more confidence in terms of investigations and the judicial process,” the Bramshill Associate said.
The Bramshill Policing Advisers officials met initially with state-owned media, and described the session as one that provided excellent feedback.
“I think we were able to explore how we can work more collaboratively and how we can manage expectations with regards to information-sharing so that we don’t breach the human rights of individuals whether they’re a victim or whether they’re a perpetrator, so that they can feel confidence that that judicial process will proceed,” Ms. Samuels said. “It was good to hear about how we can run some joint campaigns in the community, to perhaps get rid of some of the unsightly vehicles that we see around our communities. There are some great opportunities for looking at collaborative working and improved sharing of information.”
It was revealed that individuals within the police were being trained in how and what information to provide to media.
“We’re going to be looking at training police personnel, so that they can gauge and take part in interviews, so probably over the next few months we’ll begin to see a change in the way that information is shared and how we reach out into the communities,” Ms. Samuels said.
The Bramhill Associate explained that the objective of the meeting with the private press, which was to follow shortly, was exactly the same as the first meeting, noting that they wanted to find out what challenges they are experiencing, the opportunities for improved collaboration and information sharing.
“This very much falls in the new strategic plan, and the six-point plan is very much about improving policing in the communities, about reducing crime, creating safer communities for both residents as well as businesses and tourists as well,” Ms. Samuels said. “So it’s all about improving police service.”
