Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 25, 2016 (SKNIS): Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, has commended two officers of the Customs and Excise Department on a job well done.
Delivering an address to mark International Custom Day 2016 at the St. Georges Anglican Church on Sunday morning, Prime Minister Harris said, “today I applaud Customs Officer Grade IV, Mr. Deswert Douglas, and Senior Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Miss Launlia Archibald, for having created the Customs Calculator,” adding, “your work has added tremendous value to modernisation of the department in the eyes of people in the country.”
The Customs Calculator, which was recently unveiled by the department, allows for “the non-commercial importer to independently determine the duties and other taxes to be paid,” according to Prime Minister Harris. He further said that “the department understands that an informed client is an empowered individual who is able to plan more wisely.”
International Custom Day 2016 was celebrated under the theme “Digital Customs: Progressive Engagement.” Prime Minister Harris said that “the theme evokes the ideals of modernisation, efficiency and interaction.
The addition of the customs calculator to the Customs and Excise Department is in keeping with the world wide thrust to modernize the department.
