Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 26, 2016 (SKNIS)—Members of the St. Kitts Christian Council and the St. Kitts Evangelical Association met on Monday January 25, 2016, with the Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs in the Government of National Unity, the Honourable Premier of Nevis, Vance Amory at Government Headquarters.
Premier Amory expressed to the church leaders a proposal for greater involvement of the churches in the schools in giving moral and spiritual instruction by way of having chaplains in the schools. He also expressed a desire for greater collaboration between the churches and the Government.
Premier Amory is of the view that spiritual and moral instruction in the schools can help to engender among our young people a greater respect for life and inculcate in them values such as forgiveness, tolerance and compassion.
The church leaders shared concern about the spate of violent crime gripping the country and said that they were impressed to hear the call by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris in his New Year’s Day address for the convocation of a National Week of Prayer. The National Week of Prayer is tentatively set to be held in February and the set date will be announced shortly.
Other matters that were discussed included the identification of a national burial site as the Springfield cemetery was almost consumed, and other periods of prayer throughout the year to facilitate healing and peace in the country.
