World Bank Positive on Geothermal Interconnect Project

    World Bank  representatives were in Nevis on April 30th. to assess West Indies Power’s proposed submarine electrical transmission of geothermal power from Nevis to other islands in the Caribbean. 

    During meetings between the World Bank representatives and West Indies Power, the technology to be used and the viability of the submarine electrical transmission system were discussed. Also, the amount of electrical power that West Indies Power could  produce and the distance it could be transmitted via its proposed Caribbean Interconnect Plan were confirmed.

     West Indies Power advised the representatives that it could produce several hundred MW’s of electricity from the geothermal resources on the  island of Nevis which could be transmitted as far as Puerto Rico via the Caribbean Interconnect Plan.

    The World Bank representatives also met with officials of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and the Nevis Electricity Company Ltd (NEVLEC).

     Kerry McDonald, CEO of West Indies Power  indicated that “The World Bank representatives were very impressed with West Indies Power proposed   Caribbean Interconnect Plan.”  He added that the World Bank  representatives said  that “ the transmission of geothermal power via submarine electrical transmission cables is definitely one of the answers to lowering the cost and increasing the reliability of electricity for the islands of the Caribbean.”
