Hundreds find ‘Bashment Granny’ amusing

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CARNIVAL VILLAGE came alive Sunday night (May 3) as hundreds of patrons flocked the venue to see one of Jamaica’s top stage plays, Bashment Granny 2: The Saga Continues.

The play, which centrally focused on a bar called Bashment Entertainment, featured the daily running of and gossips within the bar and a foreigner who returned for money he claimed belong to him.

It featured six main characters: Barbaleta the bartender; Half-a-Dog, the foreigner; Bashment, owner of the bar; the banker and her husband, who is a lawyer; and star of the play, Shebada, a scared but very saucy policeman. Every member of the cast created much laughter and excitement among the crowd throughout the entire play.

However, the most hilarious aspect of the play was in Part Two when Shebada did a full split on stage. He followed this action by jumping on the counter of the bar, balanced himself on his head and started gyrating in such a manner that caused the entire crowd to cheer and scream for more.

Although rain caused a few interruptions to the evening’s event, the audience was very receptive and, at the end of the play, they left the venue a satisfied crowd but still wanting more.

The show began sometime after 8:00 p.m. and had ended just before midnight. Proceeds from the show will go towards the expense account of the recently crowned Miss World St. Kitts, Venetta Zakers, who will be travelling to South Africa to represent the Federation at the Miss World Pageant later this year.

Bashment Granny was written by Garfield Reid and directed by Michael Nicholson. The play was also staged in Nevis on Friday night (May 1) at the Cultural Complex, and an after-party with the entire cast was held at Club Kactus at the conclusion of Sunday night’s show.
