Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 11, 2016 (SKNIS): The Department of Youth Empowerment is preparing to roll out a new initiative that promotes bonding between fathers and their children.
On Easter Monday (March 28), the first ever Build Together Father/Child Sand Sculpting Challenge will be held at North Frigate Bay Beach (Marriott). Youth Officer Jermaine Pemberton said the event is “a gateway for fathers to spend more time with, and to build a better relationship with their son(s) or daughter(s).”
Sand sculpting is not wildly popular in St. Kitts but some structures can occasionally be seen dotting various beaches.
“It (the challenge) is just something different, something we haven’t seen before,” Pemberton stated, noting that there are many creative and artistic individuals on island. “We never know until we try and that’s what we have to do. We have to find all ways and [new] avenues for fathers to get that opportunity to be there for their children.”
The competition is open to residents and visitors in St. Kitts and Nevis. Free registration is available in two categories. The first is: one father plus one or two children between the ages of three to 16 years, while the second is: one father plus three to five children ages three to 16 years.
The youth officer said the strengthening of the father and child relationship is important to producing a better nation while encouraging fathers to participate.
“Most of the projects that we see are for mothers so that they can help to lead and be in the forefront of our families,” Mr. Pemberton stated. “It’s supposed to be our fathers who are taking the initiative and stepping up and wanting to be the ones out in front with their children - taking over the families again and being the head of the household.”
Registration forms are available at all primary and secondary schools in St. Kitts, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, and also at the Department of Youth Empowerment, Church Street.
