BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HARD-HITTING Nevisian left-handed opening batsman Kieran Powell has returned to First Class cricket with a brilliant half century on the opening day of the ninth round of the West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League Four-Day Competition.

Powell, who took a break from playing cricket in 2015 to try out for Major League Baseball (MLB), was not successful in his bid to enter the lucrative sport in the United States.

During his stint with several teams via tryouts, he had told media representatives at a press conference that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity that he was looking forward to achieve.

On his return to the cricket pitch at the Sir Vivian Richards Ground in Antigua where the Leeward Island Hurricanes are playing table topper Guyana Jaguars, Powell blasted 6x4’s and 1x6 in a 48-ball half century yesterday (Mar. 11) morning.

Powell and his partner, West Indies U-19 player Keacy Carty, pushed the opening stand to 76 before he was dismissed by Christopher Barnwell for 55.

This is his first competitive match at the regional level since 2014.

However, his sights are now set on returning to play for the regional team, as he began that quest yesterday when he was selected to open the batting.

Up to press time the score stood at 237 for 3 off 86 overs.

In addition to Powell and Carty, representing Leeward Islands’ team in this match are Orlando Peters, Rahkeem Cornwall, Daron Cruickshank, Jahmar Hamilton (WKP), Montcin Hodge, Jeremiah Louis, Alzarri Joseph, Jacques Taylor and Gavin Tonge.
