March 8, 2016 -- The unique public/private partnership between the NIA and the Nevis Humane Society (ARK) is one that will continue to bear fruit as construction of the newly expanded Prospect Clinic nears completion. The modern diagnostic and treatment equipment being provided by the Nevis Humane Society (NHS), as well as the expanded clinic services to be provided by the two Clinic Vets, Dr. Patricia Bartlette and Dr. Ambrose James and staff, will afford animals on Nevis a better treatment facility in a better working environment.

It is a win-win project for Nevis livestock farmers and pet owners and will raise the bar on awareness for better animal care island-wide.  Pigs, goats, sheep and cattle will benefit from improved breeding through artificial insemination provided by the UN FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization), horses will have access to necessary tetanus vaccines, and a properly stocked pharmacy will be located in the remodeled old Clinic building, along with a reception area with displays of pet supplies for purchase.

The Clinic Project has dramatically shown that co-operation between the non-profit Nevis Humane Society (ARK) and the NIA, Agriculture Dept. and Nevis vets, and Physical Planning Dept. is resulting in the common goal of better treatment for Nevis animals and an expanded spay/neuter schedule. Over the past year, ARK has purchased more than $7,000 US of equipment currently in use in the existing 36-year-old Clinic. During this year, ARK will continue to provide financial aid to Nevis families unable to pay spay/neuter fees and will purchase more major equipment prior to the opening of the new Clinic. And staff will be trained to operate the new equipment.

Join us at the Nevis Humane Society (ARK) Booth and the Prospect Vet Clinic booths at the Agriculture Fair to be held on March 17 and 18 (Thursday and Friday) at the Charlestown Secondary School Grounds.

Take the opportunity to become a member of ARK and help support this project through donations to purchase more much-needed diagnostic and treatment equipment. Booth displays will show equipment to be purchased, as well as the Clinic floor plans and other photos. Information leaflets re best pet care practices and other practical information will be distributed to school children and pet owners. And remember in the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
