BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DEFENDING champions Charles E Mills Secondary School executed a dominant performance on day two (Mar. 19) of the TDC Championships to take a command in the medals hunt.
The Sandy Point institution took up the gauntlet in the 800 meter races to leap to the top of the medal standings when they produced the top two finishers in the Girls U-14 and U-16.
Keneah Romney dominated the U-14 event with a time of 3:11.58, beating out her compatriot Abigail O'Flaherty who clocked 3:17.03 and Saddlers Secondary Damecia Harvey.
The performance was replicated in the Under-16 event, when Aliah Vanterpool blew away the field and her compatriot Nickeisha Howe to take the gold medal, while Washington Archibald’s Shalice Thompson came in third.
Entering the second day of competition, the defending champions trailed Washington Archibald High School in the medal tally, but superb performances in the middle distance, sprint and field events ensured that they keep their hands on the title and the trophy at their school.
In the Boys U-18 Discuss, Charles E Mills grabbed a bronze medal when Kadeem Govia had a throw of 36.45m, losing out to Verchilds High School’s Dejorn Richards’ 37.63m and Anwa Springer with 39.40m.
The Sandy Point team took home silver in the Girls Under-14 4x400m Relay, but that performance was improved in the Girls U-16 event when the team ran away with the gold medal in a time of 4:07.90, leaving their competitors in the dust.
With over 15 gold medals still up for grabs today, third and final day, the Charles E Mills Secondary will be looking to hold on to their slender lead at the top of the table.
They currently lead the standings over Washington Archibald High School by a single gold medal.
