CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, March 21, 2016 -- Canadian born acrylic artist, Rosemary Smith, has created a portrait of a pottery icon, Almena “Miss George” Cornelius, a resident of Newcastle.

The portrait is part of a series of portrait paintings of “Working Women in Nevis” that Smith has created.  Smith’s inspiration and ideas for her pop art is drawn from the common aspects of everyday life on the island of Nevis.

A large proportion of Almena’s day to day life involves preservation of Nevis pottery skills in a quiet admirable skillful approach. This is what Smith has honored in a classic portrait.

Smith is also known for her eye-catching, whimsical and colourful acrylic pop art drawing her inspiration from the common aspects of everyday life on the island..

Almena qualifies to be in Smith’s list. She did not shy away from learning her pottery skills from her grandmother and great aunt during her adolescence and as an adult. She continues to perfect the skilI.

In an interview, Almena recalled how most of the pottery processes were done manually.  “We would knead the clay on our knees. We did not have a treadmill,” she said.

“I would like to pass on my skills to the youth but they do not want to make their hands dirty. If the skill is taught in skills, it would not die out,” she added.  Almena’s cottage industry is an attraction to tourists and local people. They admire her indigenous skills and purchase souvenirs made from clay.

Since Smith began to exhibit at the Charlestown Art Gallery, her work  has found homes in United States, Great Britain, Europe and Canada.

The soon to be open Voorlinden Gallery in The Netherlands, will feature  Smith’s artwork. When Smith’s work is featured anywhere in the world, Nevis will be in her list.
