CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - THE law mandating seatbelt wear and prohibiting cellular phone usage is now enforceable in the Federation. Weekend Vibes took to the streets to ask Nevisians their opinions on the cellular phone law.

Lady El – Yes! I agree to the banning of cell phones while driving. Cell phone in use while driving is very dangerous. It being banned can prevent accidents and also prevent the loss of one’s life. I find that it is a very big step in the country to protect pedestrians and drivers.

Audain –Yes! It should be banned, because while driving and concentrating on your cell phone causes distraction. It also reduces your judgment while driving and control of the vehicle is at its lowest.

Pat – No! I don’t think it should be banned while driving. I think measures should be in terms of ear plugs. Cell phone becomes a day to day life for individuals. If you look at the lifestyle, cell phone is like a business; it’s much more convenient.

Mr. Butler – I don’t think it should have been banned. The purposes of cell phones are principally for emergency use, to help in reaching someone quickly. It assists the speedy spread of information. It saves on time commercially. Police, doctors and businessmen are greatly assisted by its use. If it is banned for the general public, it is definitely banned to the police who have to use their phone while on patrol…for emergencies, even though they have their Cross Band Radios.

Shamaiah - I support the ban on the use of cell phones while one is driving a motor vehicle. It is a distraction for most people and concentration is very important when driving. I think it’s a brilliant step that has been taken to save a life that might just be your own.
