Temple Church salutes mothers

Pastor Eugene Springette belts out a solo in praise of the mothers. Standing next to him is his daughter and youth singer, Latoya Webster and behind them is the visiting Pastor Vernon Harvey

BASSETERRE ST. KITTS (May 10, 2009) -- Dieppe Bay-based Temple Church commemorated Mother’s Day, this year celebrated in many countries on Sunday May 10, in style by recognising mothers in its congregation with the entire service dedicated to them. However, named church’s Mother of the Year was Nurse Oslyn Harvey who is unmarried and has no children.

Vice president of the Temple Church Women’s Group, Pearl Warner, while reading Harvey’s citation said: “You have been very good to us as a mother of the church and even though you are not a mother, you have been like a mother to us. You have been the backbone of our fellowship and we just want to show you our appreciation as our church mother.”

Harvey who joined the Temple Church five years ago from her homeland, Guyana, is also a pastor at the church. She is credited for having motivated the women and propping up their group to the strong fellowship group that it is today. According to Warner, all members of the church are able to relate with Harvey as she always presses them on to do what is right.

Before the main service that was led by visiting minister, Vernon Harvey of Antigua, and based on Proverbs 31: 10-31 which extols the virtues of a good woman, church member Sandra Bowrin read a poem that gave honour to the mothers for what they have done for humanity throughout the years, thanking them for the sacrifices they have made to bring up the children.

Pastor Eugene Springette asked all the mothers to stand and serenaded them with a song whose lyrics he had written but rendered it with a borrowed tune. He later explained: “It (the song) is more or else letting the women and the mothers know that we love them and in spite of all that we have been through, we have never doubted their love for us.”
