Roadtown, Tortola - Government signed an agreement this afternoon with local company BVI Paving Limited for the asphaltic concrete overlay of the existing road pavement in Brewer’s Bay.

Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, signed the $493,900 contract on behalf of Government, while Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Julian Fraser, signed as the Premier’s witness.  Mr. Ashley Ritter signed on behalf of BVI Paving Limited.

The Premier welcomed the signing of the agreement. “I am glad that we have reached this stage and I wish to thank to thank the Public Works Department and the Ministry of Communications and Works for getting the project on the way.”

The Premier also expressed his gratitude to the company. “I thank the company for making its services available to the Government and I commend you for the work done previously.”

The Minister for Communications and Works also welcomed the agreement while reaffirming the ministry’s mission to ensure continued development and maintenance of public infrastructure.

“This project is part of Government’s overall road network rehabilitation and it is important to note that we put the travelling motorists first at all times. The motorists should know that the road projects undertaken by Government are all in their best interest,” Minister Fraser said.

In his remarks, the contractor thanked the Premier and Government for the confidence placed in his company.”  “It is a privilege to be here signing another contract and I thank the Government for having the confidence in the company. Work on this project is expected to begin on May 18,” Mr.  Ritter said.

BVI Paving Limited is the only local supplier of asphalt material, and has the resources and capabilities to perform extensive resurfacing and paving works.  They will supply and overlay 2,245 tons of asphaltic concrete with 3 inches of thickness on the existing 18 feet wide road pavement from the junction of the Ridge Road in the vicinity of Cool Breeze Bar to the Brewer’s Bay Community Centre.

This particular stretch of road located on hilly terrain has been severely damaged for some time now, and the only maintenance activities that have been used to improve the surface is localized patching.

This contract will provide for a more holistic programme that will ensure the structure of the road is properly maintained and protected from further water damage, resulting in safer and more comfortable transport medium for motorists.

It is a part of the ministry’s vision that by the year 2018, the Virgin Islands (UK) would enjoy a public road network that facilitates the safe and efficient flow of traffic throughout the Territory.
