BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man was yesterday (May 9) charged for inflicting a wound to the head of a woman with a hammer.
Assistant Commissioner of Police with Responsibility for the Crime Directorate, Andre Mitchell told this media house that the man, Damian Hendrickson of Garden Housing Project, was charged with unlawful and malicious wounding and was still in custody pending bail.
He also said that the incident occurred on Friday night (May 6) in the vicinity of the Basseterre Ferry Terminal.
This media house learned that the woman had thrown a bottle, which accidentally struck Hendrickson and caused a wound to his forehead.
It is reported that the woman had apologised but he left the scene and shortly after returned with a hammer and struck her to the head.
This incident allegedly occurred in the presence of many patrons to the bars in the vicinity and a male intervened and led her away from the scene.
On a visit to the hospital yesterday morning, SKNVibes met and spoke with the woman, who is said to be in her 30s.
The woman admitted to throwing a bottle but it was intended for someone with whom she had a problem and not Hendrickson.
She explained that she did not leave immediately for the hospital and that the reason for going there was not in connection with the head wound, but for a pain she felt in the region of her heart after lifting a heavy object.
While there, however, sutures were administered to her wound and she was also being treated for a mental ailment for which she claimed she had been suffering from for a number of years.
The young woman also said she was unaware that the bottle had caused an injury to the man’s forehead, and after he struck her with the hammer she thought the blood on his person came from her wound.
SKNVibes also spoke with Hendrickson who was at the hospital at that time.
He corroborated the young woman’s account of the incident and informed that he too had sutures administered to his wound.
At the time of posting this article, it is not known if Hendrickson is on bail but the young woman remains at the JNF General Hospital in the Psychiatric Ward.
