GIS Press Release

Roadtown, Tortola - The National Security Council (NSC) is reaffirming its commitment to implementing corrective measures at Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut to ensure the continued safety of the public and prison officers and the appropriate containment and treatment of inmates.

The reassurance comes in the wake of the council’s latest meeting on Monday, May 11, which included a lengthy discussion on the prison following the escape of two prisoners from the facility on Saturday, May 9.

Monday’s NSC meeting was also attended by Education Minister, Honourable Andrew Fahie who has responsibility for prisons and Acting Superintendant of Prison, Mr. Leslie McMaster.

In keeping with its earlier promise to implement corrective measures at the prison, the NSC is assuring residents of the Territory that addressing the situation there remains one of paramount importance and that action is in hand.

In addition, the Prison Review Committee appointed by the NSC will, in the coming weeks, undertake its review of the state of affairs at the prison, before submitting its report by mid-June.
The report of the review committee is expected to highlight the general conditions at the prison and the problems which led to the current state of affairs there.

The NSC is comprised of the Governor as Chairman, the Premier, Deputy Premier, Attorney General and the Commissioner of Police.  The Cabinet Secretary serves as secretary to the NSC.
