Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 17, 2016 (SKNIS): Fathers and their daughters spent quality time on Sunday (May 15) creating sand sculptures as part of the inaugural Father-Child Sand Sculpting Challenge.

The event was organized by the Department of Youth Empowerment. Youth Officer, Jermaine Pemberton, said everyone had a great time.

“Even though we didn’t get the turnout we were looking for, it was a meaningful experience where fathers spent some time with their kids and just relate to them in ways they don’t normally do,” he said, citing the unique nature of the competition for locals.

Nine families had originally registered to participate but only three actually took part. All of the teams featured one father and a daughter. They worked from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and were busy collecting sea water and packing sand to create model castles. The third team opted to fashion facial replicas of themselves. Pemberton said the daughters were very involved in the process and were enthusiastic.

“They did their part and they were happy to do so,” Mr. Pemberton said. “They seemed excited about it (building the structures) and based on the feedback from the parents they had a lot of fun.”

An appreciative crowd also gathered and gave verbal encouragement to the teams. The youth officer said the parents expressed pleasure with the staging and showed an interest in participating in future events. He said ideas are already being generated to improve upon the activity.

Appreciation was expressed to sponsors: The St. Kitts Marriott Resort, St. Kitts Scenic Railway, Caribbean Journey Masters, Delisle Walwyn and Kenneth’s Dive Center.
