BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 19th, 2016 (PRESS SEC) – Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris and his delegation to Taiwan will attend the inauguration of the country’s first female President, Tsai Ing-wen, and her Vice President, Chen Chien-jen, in just a few hours.
The handover ceremony between outgoing President Ma Ying-jeou and President-elect Tsai Ing-wen is scheduled to take place on the third floor of the Presidential Office Building in the capital city of Taipei at 9:00a.m. on Friday, May 20th (St. Kitts and Nevis time: 9:00p.m. tonight, Thursday, May 19th). The swearing-in of the new President and Vice President will follow the handover ceremony.
Shortly afterwards, the newly inaugurated President, Tsai Ing-wen, will deliver a 30-minute speech outside the Presidential Office Building during an outdoor event. This event will include performances by military guards of honour and local singers.
The China Post reports that, “Those present at the event will enjoy a 50-minute, 1,000-person performance titled "The Light of Taiwan" organized by the Paper Windmill Foundation. The performance will tell the story of Taiwan from Dutch colonization, Qing Dynasty rule, Japanese colonization and R.O.C. governance up to modern times and will feature the multicultural elements that make up the nation.”
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nearly 700 Heads of States, diplomats and foreign dignitaries from 59 countries have come to witness the inauguration. The 59 represented countries include Taiwan’s 22 diplomatic allies. The remaining 37 countries whose representatives are in attendance do not have formal ties with Taiwan.
Both The Taipei Times and The China Post have reported on Prime Minister Harris’ presence.
The China Post reserved the third paragraph of today’s article titled “Country prepares for presidential inauguration” for the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis. That paragraph reads in full: “The ministry also welcomed Timothy Harris, prime minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and his entourage upon their arrival in Taiwan early Thursday.”
The inauguration ceremony for President-elect Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President-elect Chen Chien-jen will be the first-ever Taiwanese presidential inauguration to be streamed live.
