$50,000 raised at Final Countdown Show

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Final Countdown ended with patrons of the event giving it two thumbs up and organisers reporting that they were successful in raising tens of thousands of dollars.

The charitable event was held on Friday (Jun. 4) evening at the St. Kitts Marriott Ballroom and was organized by students of Windsor University and staff of the Joseph N. France General Hospital, particularly Medical Chief of Staff Dr. Cameron Wilkinson.

It featured an amalgam of cultural exhibitions including fashion presentations and dances and skits.

One of the skits in particular presented the scenario of students preparing for examinations while another posed the question of what should be done to an 80-year-old woman who had a diabetic foot.

Another proposed the scenario of a patient reporting to the hospital at 2:00 a.m. with complaints of a headache. Public Relations Officer to the Final Countdown Show committee Laura Besona told SKNVibes the purpose of that presentation was to dispel the idea or feeling that medical practitioners shirk their responsibilities etc. She said it was to show that all hands are pooled on deck in such situations to ensure that patients receive the care they deserve and need.

The “Pregnant Virgin” skit was thought-provoking as it drew comparison between fact and fiction.

All skits were presented with some measure of hilarity, drawing boisterous laughter from members of the audience.

Particularly hilarious was the “Countdown to Delivery” skit in which the actors were able to pull off without uttering a single word.

The curtains of the event came down with a rendition of Europe’s Final Countdown. Some of the male Windsor students went on stage shirtless with chiseled, oiled bodies and performed the song, which was led by Dr. Wilkinson.

Besona told SKNVibes that that particular performance represented the final countdown of what she called “the third year rotation” and the final countdown to examinations which would take place later this month.

She said the show was a success and the funds raised exceeded the $30,000 which was raised at last year’s event.

And Dr. Wilkinson on his Facebook page indicated that more than $50,000 was raised during the event and would be used to purchase two defibrillators and cardiac monitors.
