June 30th, 2016 -- On June 29, 2016, the Department of Marine Resources will be celebrating the significance of the cultural, historical and socio-economic contribution of our fisherfolk in St.Kitts and Nevis. The Caribbean Fisherfolk Day will also be commemorated on a regional scale as far west as Belize and within the Eastern Caribbean chain of islands archipelago.
On this day, there will be several public and fisher focused engagement activities by way of radio interviews and live social media coverage highlighting the invaluable contributions of fishers to our Federation. A 10 % discount all fishing gear and fish feed will be given to registered fishers on Caribbean Fisherfolk Day. Additionally, the fishing vessel FV Transformation at the Basseterre Fisheries Complex will be officially introduced to the fishers.
This vessel is valued at $500,000 USD and was procured through bilateral arrangement between the Government of St. Kitts & Nevis and the Government of Japan. FV Transformation will enable the Department of Marine Resources to conduct at-sea fisherman training, implement various fish catch experiments, resources surveys, and install and monitor Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs).
