BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALTHOUGH the recent beautification project at Independence Square has won rave reviews from both residents and tourists, that has not stopped some persons from defacing the enhanced site.
Over the past several months, restorative work has been done on the fountain, old benches replaced and flower beds have been planted around the square. General landscaping, painting of the perimeter walls and the placement of garbage receptacles are expected to be undertaken in upcoming weeks.
A release issued by the police reveals they have received reports that persons are unlawfully removing plants from Independence Square. It warns that those found guilty of this praedial larceny might face incarceration and urges persons to refrain from the practice.
“The Hotel and Tourism Association in collaboration with other businesses have embarked on a project to beautify the Square. Having planted several decorative plants around the water fountain at great expense, some person or persons have been unlawfully removing these plants.
“The police have been sensitised on this development and will increase vigilance in the area of the square. Persons convicted of this offence are liable to imprisonment for three months. The police are appealing to the public to discourage any person who engages in this practice or to report persons who remove these plants from the square.”
SEARCH WARRANT EXECUTED
The release further informs that on Thursday, May 14, police in St. Pauls executed a search warrant for controlled drugs, arms and ammunition on the premises of Dieppe Bay’s Syndrick Henderson. A large quantity of marijuana was found and Henderson was arrested and charged for “possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to supply”.
He is set to appear in court shortly to answer the charges.
