Former national cricketer accuses police of abuse

By: Donovan Matthews, SKNVibes

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A FORMER national cricketer has accused three officers of the Nevis Division of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force of physically abusing him.

Frank Monzac, a former left-arm spinner, said the assault occurred last Saturday afternoon (May 16) when police responded to a robbery report in Cotton Ground. Monzac said two police vehicles arrived around 5:30 and three officers disembarked and attacked him. He said one of them choked him while another pulled his shirt and the third officer kicked him.

Monzac said he was then handcuffed, placed in one of the vehicles and taken to the Charlestown Police Station where he was further assaulted. He said he was released without being charged on the orders of a Sergeant who appeared shortly after they arrived at the station.

Monzac, who also provided the names of the three officers, said their treatment of him was unnecessary since he was only having fun with a friend. He explained that he was drinking with some friends when he took $20 from one of them saying he was going to buy some drinks. The friend however reported the matter to the police who visited the scene and took Monzac into custody.

According to Monzac, he repaid the money at the station after he was released. He later visited the Alexandra Hospital where he obtained a medical certificate revealing minor abrasions and a cut lip.

SKNVibes contacted the office in charge of Nevis, Superintendent Samuel Seabrookes, who said the incident is an allegation and it is under investigation.
