BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE refurbishment of portions of the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport to accommodate increased air travel is one of the areas of improvement that the Team Unity Government is embarking on, Minister of Transport the Hon. Ian Liburd has informed.
Liburd, who was at the time speaking at a Government town hall meeting, said the St. Christopher and Air and Sea Port Authority (SCASPA) is actively pursuing this project.
“Because the last time any work was done at the Airport, we refurbished the terminal building and that terminal building was constructed to accommodate 400 passengers per peak hour period. The traffic coming at the Airport has far outstripped the capacity of the terminal. So we are looking at a proposal to deal with the technical designs and for the management of the Airport and soon SCASPA would provide its input for Cabinet’s consideration.
Although he did not specify a timeline, Minister Liburd promised that “come shortly, we’ll also be having an improved international airport at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw site. And that is what your Team Unity Administration is doing for you.”
He said the proposal came from a company with which the current administration is familiar.
“It’s a technical and financial proposal which provides an opportunity to develop a 3P or a public-private partnership for the management of the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw Airport. Your Team Unity administration will give you a state-of-the-art international (airport) – capable of boosting inward traffic and contributing to economic growth.
“…they have been in long term partnership with the development of St. Kitts and Nevis. In 1994-1996 they designed and constructed the main passenger terminal building, they designed and constructed the air traffic control building and they also looked at the extension of the airside infrastructure as well. So they are familiar to our administration.”
