BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Federation is receiving commendations for the successful hosting of matches in the 2016 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), despite the inclement weather that affected a number of games in the tournament.
In a media interview, CPL Public Relations Officer Peter Breen explained that the overall tournament has been one of the best in the short life of the CPL.
Speaking specifically to the Federation’s hosting of the last four matches in the tournament, Breen said “St. Kitts and Nevis has done a wonderful job in putting on a great show, they have been a great host and obviously culminating in what has been a fantastic finals”.
Playing on Sunday in the one-sided finals, the Jamaica Tallawahs humbled the Guyana Amazon Warriors by nine wickets, after the Warriors were bowled out for 93 runs.
“It was tough for the Guyana Amazon Warriors and I believe they have been the most consistent team throughout the tournament and they came up against a Gayle storm in the finals,” Breen noted.
The government had bid approximately US$1.2 Million to host the finals week of the tournament played here in the Federation, getting the nod ahead of Trinidad and Guyana.
Breen informed that the Federation would be seen in over 100,000,000 households worldwide, since the tournament had expanded its global reach and is being rated as the third best competition globally, only being eclipsed by the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash in Australia.
Minister of Sports the Hon. Shawn Richard told SKNVibes that the government is happy to have hosted the finals of the tournament, pointing to the success in the area of the crowd support that they received during the final match of the tournament.
He said on the last day the venue was completely sold out and persons looking for tickets were only able to squeeze into the party stand.
Further, the Minister extended a hand of congratulation to all the persons that were involved in making the tournament a success.
“I would want to go on record thanking the team from the Sports Department, the local organizing committee, the grounds men and all the different persons who were involved in the organization of the CPL.”
To this end, he said, the staging of the finals would have had an impact on the younger players to strive harder in all sports disciplines.
