BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 2009 Miss Green Valley contestants are ready for the May 29 stage where they will showcase their talent, poise and beauty, with hopes of capturing the crown.

The contestants for this year’s pageant are Anthea Morris, Hazel Webbe, Kercha Sealy-Hanley, Natasha Benjamin, Jade Walwyn and Shaday Peters.

The show will be held at Maynard’s Park, Cayon and the contestants will compete in three categories - Introductory Speech, Talent and Cultural Wear.

Velda Irish, Chairperson of the Miss Green Valley Sub-committee, said that each year they try to make the show as different as possible from the previous year.

“This year the contestants will make tribute to persons who have made contributions to Green Valley but have passed on,” she said.

“They will make those tributes during their speech.”

This is the second year Irish has been chairing the committee and said that one of the difficulties it faces is finding contestants to participate in the show.

“It seems as though society has put a stigma on queen shows, but it’s overall a good experience for the girls and boosts their self-confidence.

“One of the contestant’s has even told me that she is participating in the show to prove to herself that she can do this,” Irish said.

However, she said that preparations are going well and persons attending the show would get a mixture of talent from the contestants. She also stated that this year would have a packed exciting sideshow.

The pageant committee has also organised a number of activities for the contestants, with the hope of them creating a bond among the six beauties.

“One of the activities they’ve had was dinner, compliments Fisherman’s Wharf, and they also went to watch a movie the same night. And this Friday we will be on Fort Street promoting the show,” Irish revealed.

In terms of prizes, Irish said that they are still negotiating but all of the contestants would be financially awarded. She added that they are hoping to obtain attractive prizes, which include a trip for the winner.

“I am inviting the general public to come out and support the contestants. Security is high on priority and I also want them to come out early so they don’t miss anything, not even the fanfare which will be talked about for years to come,” she said.

The Pageant is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m.
