Jamaica’s Usain Bolt

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - JAMAICAN World Champion Usain Bolt won his third consecutive Olympic Games title, when he demolished a strong 100m field to retain his crown as fastest man last evening (Aug. 14) in RIO.

Running the Finals of the 100m with a strong field which included the likes of Justin Gatlin, Yohan Blake and Andre De Grasse, the Olympic champion never looked troubled in the race as he sped away from the pack after the 60m point.

Bolt registered a season’s best of 9,81 seconds to win the race, with American Justin Gatlin coming in second with a time of 9.89s. Canadian Andre De Grasse was third with 9.91s.

The Jamaican sprint king was under a cloud coming into the meet after he suffered an injury at his country’s nation trial, thus opening the door for the likes of the American Gatlin and De Grasse to shine.

But the sprint legend made winning the Gold Medal look easy, as he eased up with some 20m to go.

With the victory, Bolt has now become the only man to win three consecutive Gold medals in the men’s 100m at the Olympic Games in Track and Field.

Meanwhile, the Federation’s sprint legend Kim Collins was unable to make the Finals after he was left behind in a tough semi-finals race.

Running in the second of three semi-final races which involved both Bolt and De Grasse, Collins could not keep-up with the speed of the younger athletes and he finished sixth in that race, with a time of  10.12 seconds.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Tameka Williams will be in action today, when she competes in the Women’s 200m Heats.
